Long Beach State is widely recognized as one of the most successful athletic programs in the Big West Conference, having produced dozens of high-caliber athletes and Olympians. The Beach competes in 19 men’s and women’s sports at the NCAA Division I level.

The athletics department has produced six national championships – one men’s volleyball title and five women’s volleyball titles – and routinely sends teams to NCAA postseason tournaments. The Dirtbags baseball team has appeared in four College World Series, the women’s basketball team has reached the NCAA Final Four twice, and the men’s basketball team played in nine NCAA Tournaments, the most recent in 2012. Women’s softball also has competed in five College World Series.

Additionally, men’s and women’s water polo, tennis, soccer and golf have enjoyed postseason success.

More than 100 Long Beach State athletes have competed for various countries in the Olympics. Most recently, volleyball player David Lee competed in the 2016 Rio Games, while eight former Long Beach State athletes took home medals, including Misty May-Treanor, a two-time NCAA Player of the Year, at the 2012 London Games.

Former Long Beach State athletes have excelled at the professional level as well, mainly in major league baseball. Since 2010, Long Beach State has boasted more players in Major League Baseball (46) than any other university or college. Among current players are infielder Danny Espinoza, third baseman Evan Longoria, pitcher Bryan Shaw and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Several former athletes have competed in the National Basketball Association (20), the National Football League (33), Association of Volleyball Professionals (11), women’s basketball (five) and Professional Golf Association (five).
